I got lost in the movement of this painting, layering transparent color upon transparent color; those layers creating new colors as they visually blended on the gessobord, eventually creating some opaque density. When I neared the end, I wondered why. Why did I paint such “turmoil”, the constant movement of line and shape? For me it was the persistent barrage of things we’ve had to carry through this last year, the churning in our souls as we navigate the pandemic, our political strife as a nation, the words slung back and forth with two claims on truth, the never-ending racial disparities that have plagued American history. When I finished, it struck me how important our voices are, voices of reason, justice, love and forgiveness. Our voices matter.
This is my first Beyond Color Art blogpost, launching Beyond Color: Using Paint to Heal, Create & Grow, a painting tutorial series in abstract expressionism aimed specifically at beginners and non-artists who need a creative outlet to give themselves a lift, a way to express whatever they are feeling with color. Abstract Expressionism is abstract art aimed at subjective emotional expression with a particular emphasis on the creative spontaneous act of painting.
Each time I post a new Art Bit exercise & A Bird’s Eye View painting demo, I will post a blog about the finished painting here and muse a bit about the process and what it brought up for me. The first set of videos are free, which includes: a short Welcome & Overview, my Favorite Materials, Art Bit exercise #1 and A Bird’s Eye View Painting Demo #1. Check it out!
