My Gallery exhibits paintings from the last ten years or so, when I landed in abstract expressionism with acrylic, after 35 years in representational watercolor. After a diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis in 2008 and several years of sustained pain and fatigue, painting in the abstract became a way to express the things that words cannot. I found that music and color helped in my healing, which resulted in interpreting music with color, texture and movement.
I am creating Beyond Color: Using Paint to Heal, Create & Grow tutorial videos to help beginners and those who have never painted to use color to express, grow and heal during this pandemic and beyond. The launch date is Saturday, March 20, 2021.
I am a fiscal year 2021 recipient of a Creative Support for Individuals grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
My Beyond Color Art Blog begins with the launch of my painting tutorials. In 2013, I started a “Painting-A-Day” project and blog, painting 12 x 12″ paintings. I learned the first week that a painting each day was not realistic if I wanted to avoid a melt-down. It became a Painting-A-Week. I hope to post Beyond Color painting videos and a corresponding blog each week. If you’d like it to arrive in your email, sign up for a subscription on my Beyond Color: Introduction page.
I have found through this last year of pandemic and political turmoil that beauty is essential to the human spirit, whether we find it in art, nature, the face of a loved one, an exquisite poem, a good book, laughter or Netflix. We need it like a parched throat needs clean, cold water.
May you find beauty in your day. Notice it and treasure it.
